Everything you need to know about mulch & bark

Mulching helps to keep your garden healthy and green. It improves soil quality and maintains moisture for healthy plant growth. Before calling for mulch delivery, you should learn how to pick the best mulch for the job.

There are two types of mulch: organic and inorganic. Organic mulches include materials such as wood chips, pine needles, shredded leaves, straw and bark. Organic mulch breaks down after a time, enriching the soil with nutrients from the decomposing materials. One of the popular materials for mulch is shredded bark.

What is mulch bark?

Mulch bark comes from tree barks. It’s typically lumber scraps and derivatives from sawmills, paper factories and furniture shops that manufacture with wood products. Instead of letting the wooden detritus be wasted, they are made into mulch for gardening stores and homeowners. Mulch bark is very absorbent and comes in various sizes, from tiny shreds to bigger nuggets.

Since mulch bark is biodegradable, you will have to eventually apply another layer. Wait for the mulch bark to completely disintegrate before adding another layer. If you notice uneven patches, remove the previous mulch layer first before adding a new one.

Black mulch

Black mulch can contain materials such as wood chips, lava rocks and rubber. This kind of mulch slows down water loss well. The colour provides a nice contrast against your greenery. Take note of the climate in your area as black mulch can absorb plenty of heat and thus significantly increase the soil temperature.

Soft fall mulch

Soft fall mulch is a good choice if you have kids prone to running around. It has great impact absorption properties, which is why it’s a popular option for playgrounds where kids tend to fall from play equipment. Soft fall mulch provides a softer surface for safer landing, reducing risks of injury and the severity of falls.

Medium pine mulch

Lightweight and incredibly moisture-retentive, pine mulch bark offers a great base for potted plants, shrubs and small trees. It helps keep the soil moist and therefore protects from external temperature changes. Pine decomposes more slowly so the mulch bark can last longer as well.

Terracotta chips

Bright red and stunning, terracotta chips are a great addition to flower beds. It is moisture-retentive and helps reduce soil erosion. The slow breakdown rate also means you won’t have to apply a new layer too often.
