Different Types of Landscaping Sand

There are an array of landscaping materials available that will help you achieve a well-balanced aesthetic in your landscaping project. One of the most common and useful landscaping materials is sand. Before introducing sand to your landscape, you have to first understand the distinct characteristics of various sand types. Once you have this knowledge, you are then able to better choose the sand type that will work best for your project.

Concrete sand

Concrete sand or triple washed river sand can be used in various applications. Obtained from the river mattress, it is washed and graded with aggregates, making it ideal for concreting and laying sand pits or pavers.

Brick sand

With its fine texture, brick sand is a good option when making mortar and is the ideal material for bricks and stonework. It can also be used in levelling applications.

Tiling sand

Double washed to remove impurities, tiling sand is used for easy on-site mixing and placement. With its impurities removed, tiling sand allows for minimal risks of cracking on a dry surface. It can be mixed with cement for renders and grouts.

Packing sand

Packing sand has a high clay/fine silt content allowing it to hold its shape, meaning it is typically used as a base for concrete slabs. This property also makes packing sand a reliable backfill material in applications that require it to hold a specific shape.
