Simple Tips for Cleaning Decorative Concrete Floors

Decorative concrete is exceptionally durable and can be used in a wide range of applications, making it a top choice not only for patios and walkways but also for indoor flooring. Decorative concrete floors can last a long time if you treat them properly and regularly maintain them.

Part of concrete floor maintenance is cleaning it and protecting it from damage. Here are some tips to remember when cleaning decorative concrete floors.

Consider the type of concrete finish

Depending on the concrete finish, your decorative concrete floor may require specific cleaning instructions. A pH-neutral cleaner is best for all types of concrete finishes, but if you’re not sure, you can ask your contractor what their recommended concrete cleaning solution is.

For stained decorative concrete

• Regularly dry dust mop or damp mop the stained concrete floors to clear away the grime and dirt
• When damp mopping, use a neutral pH-neutral cleaner with water
• Apply a coat of wax or floor finish, or use a film-forming sealer to protect the surface further
• Reapply as necessary; if the floors experience more foot traffic, they need the wax or finish applied more frequently

For polished decorative concrete

Polished decorative concrete floors are extremely durable due to the densification and polishing processes they underwent. As such, they don’t require sealers or waxes, making them easier to clean than other types of decorative concrete.

• Dry dust mop the floor regularly
• Damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner for a deeper clean
• If the polished concrete floors lose their sheen, buff the surface with a polishing solution

For painted decorative concrete

It’s trickier to maintain a decorative concrete floor with oil-based or latex paint, as peeling may occur.

• Avoid harsh or acidic cleaners when dealing with painted concrete surfaces
• Dry dust mop and vacuum the floors to remove grime and dirt
• Damp mop the floor with a mild cleaning solution mixed with warm water
• Use a microfibre mop with the cleaning solution to prevent excessive moisture on the painted concrete surface
